The month of October is pretty busy! Halloween isn’t the only thing in October. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month, LGBT History month and Emotional Intelligence Awareness Month to name a few. As always, these books in the picture are only a few but we have more on our shelves here at Richard Burges.
Some quick facts about these issues:
- 1 in 8 U.S. women, and 1 in 1000 U.S. men will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.
- Coming Out Day is on October 11.
- Emotional intelligence can be learned. Through a process called “plasticity,” the brain changes as individuals practice new emotional intelligence strategies

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day
Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the US. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. So more than likely someone you know or love has the disease or will develop it. It’s unfortunate but you can be better prepared for what lies ahead.
Please stop by and check out our selection of books on Alzheimer’s and or Dementia. We also have an Alzheimer’s Support Group that meets here in the library every 2nd Saturday of the month from 1:30 – 3. You and your loved one are not alone. Visit alz.org for more info.
Did you know that with your library card, you can check out books, magazines, DVDs and even CDs? You also have access to our collection of E-books and E-magazines! We also have free Wi-Fi and computers for you to use. We also have a Seed library, which means you can get up to 5 packets of seeds for free.
To sign up for a library card, all need is your Driver’s license/ID with your current address and you can sign up today!
Don’t forget that we have Story Time for the little ones every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Studies show that children, who are read to in the home and who use the library, perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
Hope to see you soon!
